Cherry blossoms bloomed in Tokyo on Tuesday, eight days earlier than normal, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced. The agency said its officials certified the first blossoms in Tokyo, the third fastest on record, making the capital the first in the nation this year to report the closely watched barometer of spring.
The agency prematurely announced in the second week of this month that the cherry blossoms were expected to bloom as early as March 18 in Tokyo. But it revised its forecast last Wednesday, saying the first blossoms in Tokyo were expected March 23.
